Description
English is the official language in the reCity masters course. It will be used to communicate with institutions, students, scholars and staff and most of all for teaching. All oral and written examinations, presentations, home-works and the final thesis will be strictly in English.
Before the Masters course begins, students who are non-native English speaker and who do not have certified competences in English language such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS or other similar certificates that conform to the highest international standards of language assessment, will participate in a mandatory levelling course on English Language and culture.
The course is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who want to study or work where English is the language of communication. As expected learning outcomes, students will learn all four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. In details, at the end of the course, level of the language ability required is the academic level, for candidates wishing to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and for those seeking professional registration.

The course will be organised as follow:
- a 50 hours course of English language and culture. This course is not integrated in the academic activities plan, but its credit value is 2 ECTS.
- linguistic self-study resources like CD-ROMs, DVDs and softwares to be freely used during the course.
- Special technical papers/articles in the field of city regeneration (demographic change, social cohesion, the review of the urban economic base, the re-assessment of the natural heritage, dematerialisation, energy-efficient cities and biodiversity) will be read and commented in a conversational way and through assignments.
- ‘ReCity EJMC dictionary’ will be prepared to be used in the Master, with all more common technical words.
- conversation groups of 6-8 students will be instituted, conducted and moderated by a tutor, in order to motivate students to practice English;
- students who will require support to the Liaison secretariat, will be assisted in attending to a TOEFL/IETLS test in an authorised centre (the cost for the test is not included in the Participation costs).
